German shephard not happy in the car

Max our male German shephard of 7yrs(5 wiyh us)is not happy when we try to go on a trip in the car,he barks,cries,scratches the carpet in the car and is generaly disobedient.we have tried him in a large cage but it makes no difference, any ideas?

Answer: Advice on car behaviour.
Hopefully he is food motivited, as I will suggest the following: This is a slow process, but effective. Start very simply. If he looks at the car, offer a reward / treat. If he takes a step towards the car, treat. If he sniffs the car, treat. If he sticks a nose in the car, treat. If he gets in the car, treat. If he sits in the car, treat. So on and so forth. You are rewarding each new step, as your dog figured out the focus is the car. A similar process applies while in the car. Reward the good behaviour, and take it a step forward each time. Ignore the bad behavour. Good luck!
