Irish Setter 6mnth pup scared of us

Help - we have just taken home a 6 month old Irish Setter puppy. He is unsocialised and has been in a kennel for the last few months. We have now had him for a week and he is still very scared of us. Sometimes he will come up to us voluntarily but will run away as soon as you make any movement. We are first time dog owners and are very concerned about what we read on the Internet about fearful dogs and potential aggression (although he has shown no aggression towards us at all). Does anyone have any advice on this? How long should it take for him to settle in with us? Any tips on handling his fear?? We cant even put him on a leash at the moment.

The more you tread carefully around him, the more he will pick up on this and continue to be scared. Try and relax and do things are you normally would, and attempt to not pay attention to his adverse reactions. Have lots of treats in your home to reward him with when he comes up to you and I would defiantly looking in to some training. Slowly does it with you pup. Lots of encouragement, praise, rewards and defiantly training.
