Dog socialising issues! Syd NSW
Hi, our staffy x is about 6 years old desexed female. We live near a big off-leash park but I'm nervous that she plays too roughly if I let her off, especially with small dogs. Extremely disobedient (won't come when called) but most dog schools only offer "puppy" training. Is she destined to be on the leash forever? or do you think there could be hope?

Hey! Try to head over to the dog park in quieter times. Or even travel to another dog park which is a bit quieter. Yes, some people do freak out at the sight of a Staffy or a dog that enjoys a bit of rough and tumble. Try to quickly explain dog owners as they come in the park that this is what you are trying to socialise your dog and sometimes she can get a bit rough. When I am socialising a new dog I find this approach to work well. As long as you communicate to the other owners they are generally happy and thankful for your courtesy. Get back to the absolute basics of obedience training and practice everywhere possible. Even keep her on the lead at the dog park and do a few training sessions. This should also help to curb her initial excitement that may lead to her ignoring you. Good luck!
